The is an extraordinary testament to sustainability, seamlessly weaving together
innovation and community empowerment.
Anchored by a solarized borehole delivering a substantial 40 cubic meters daily, it acts
as a lifeline, providing vital water to both the school and 300 households, all at an
affordable rate.
At its visionary core lies a state-of-the-art sanitation stronghold featuring innovative toilets
and bathrooms. This not only modernizes hygiene practices but ingeniously recycles
faecal sludge to produce an impressive 12,000 litres of biogas daily.
This biogas, in turn,
becomes a sustainable energy source, meeting the daily cooking needs of 400 pupils.
But the brilliance doesn't stop there—the project transforms what would be waste into a
valuable resource. The faecal matter from the toilets becomes a source of biogas,
closing the loop on sustainable energy.
Moreover, the recycled fertigated water isn't
wasted; it nurtures a vertical garden that yields an abundant 600kg of fresh vegetables.
This transformative project does not just address immediate needs but builds a resilient
and sustainable community for generations to come.
Mashimoni Squatters upgrading project aims to improve the
learning environment for 367 pupils in Mashimoni squatters’ school through upgrading and enhancing of school
facilities and resources, as well as improving the general welfare of the school and its surrounding
community through the provision of portable water supply and hygienic sanitation, both infrastructural
and non-infrastructural activities are to be pursued over three years to achieve a more conducive
learning environment: some of these include: Installing a borehole, pump and distribution of water to three Water
points; improving the school ablution block and putting new staff ablutions, erecting a perimeter wall for security,
putting up a science laboratory; providing meals to the needy students, providing school uniform to needy students;
installing school library, providing students with key textbooks putting up a kitchen and kitchen store and school
administration center and increasing the teaching and support staff.
By erecting a perimeter wall around the school, NCT has enhanced the security of the school
and the children. It has also reduced the infiltration of drugs and substance abuse into the school.
It will also reduce the risk of SGBV exposure for schoolgirls
Safe Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Education
The provision of safe water, sanitation, and hygiene education to the needy populations in urban informal settlements
and rural areas is fundamental to achieving SDGs 4 and 6. NCT has partnered with HCSOM to make this a reality for
communities in the informal settlement. By installing a borehole,
in Mashimoni squatters school will ensure sustainable access to portable water both in the school and the
surrounding community. This in effect would improve hygiene levels, and help reduce waterborne diseases.
Networking & Coordination
NCT Believes in networking and coordination with other actors on the ground. This brings synergy, learning and benefiting from the skills of others.
This is essential for success in sharing information and ideas, getting new opportunities, and achieving greater
success. Africa in my Heart Foundation Organisation visted Mashimoni School for collaborative initiatives in
Hygiene program in the school. They also donated foodstuffs to the school.
In September 2022, NCT received a delegation of students from McGill University Canada on an exchange visit to understand the work of NCT.
